World Suicide Prevention Day

With the weight of Robyn Williams' death still on our hearts, we are called to remember all those impacted by suicide tomorrow on:
World Suicide Prevention Day
September 10th, 1014

Health Canada estimates that 11% of men and 16% of women in Canada will experience depression in their lives. However, those living with HIV experience a disproportionately higher rate of depression of 5 to 42% (Boarts, Sledjeski, Bogart and Delahanty, 2006). Mental illness is the second leading cause of disability and premature death in Canada, contributing to 4000 suicides every year. Despite these staggering statistics we as Canadians continue to be more comfortable disclosing our physical illnesses than those that plague us emotionally and psychologically.

It is my hope that with the current discourse focused on mental illness and suicide we continue to widen and soften our understanding of these pervasive issues.
