Active Listening & Motivational Interviewing Skills Workshop presented by ARCH

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12TH 9:30PM - 4:30 PM

ARCH - UNIT 110, 77 WESTMOUNT ROAD | GUELPH, ON | N1H 5J1

This workshop will help peers and volunteers develop their active listening skills with a focus on person-centered peer support and will integrate a variety of motivational interviewing ("M/I") techniques. Motivational interviewing and training is an evidence-based treatment that focuses on an individual’s ambivalence to change by active listening and action-based communication. When it comes to identifying objectives, leaders can inspire change by initiating self-discovery, rationalizing objections and using elements of motivation to elicit the desired response.

In essence, motivational interviewing consists of a set of skills designed to help your clients, patients, and even loved ones identify the barriers to change as well as coaching strategies for setting achievable and realistic goals to facilitate the change they want to see in their lives.

In this session, individuals will learn:

·
The roles of ambivalence and engagement in behavior change
·  Basics of change theory as it relates to motivational interviewing
·  Describe the fundamental spirit, guiding principles and strategies of M/I
·  Practice those strategies and interventions within a small scale workshop setting
·  Recall the basic strategies of brief MI skills as demonstrated

This workshop is offered free of charge for volunteers and peer workers of ARCH (HIV/AIDS Resources & Community Health) and select partnering organizations.

We ask that non-volunteer attendees provide a $59 donation for attending the training. If you are interested in attending as a member of the general public, please contact Jasper at education [at] archguelph.ca for more information.
