Sharing of drug injection and drug inhalation equipment can result in the transmission of HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

Harm reduction practice recognizes that a certain percentage of the population will use drugs and the goal is to reduce the harm that might result from drug use. Harm reduction decreases the adverse health, social and economic consequences of substance use, for the user and the community, without requiring abstinence.
